What type of objects can be classified as FOD?

Foreign Object Debris (FOD) refers to any item that does not belong on an airport's airside area or could pose a threat to the safety of flight operations. This includes objects that may obstruct aircraft operations or cause damage to aircraft.

Debris and litter fit the definition of FOD because they can include items such as pieces of packaging, tools, or any other objects that may have been inadvertently left behind, thus creating a hazard on the runway or taxiway. Keeping the airside area clear of such debris is critical for maintaining safety for all flight operations.

While fuel tanks, aircraft parts, and pilot equipment are essential components of aviation operations, they do not qualify as FOD within this context. Fuel tanks and aircraft parts are necessary for the functioning of the aircraft and are typically found where they should be during normal operations. Pilot equipment also serves a functional role during flights. In contrast, debris and litter are unintentional and can lead to dangerous situations, highlighting their classification as FOD.
